Now I will start off by saying that I enjoy Denzel Washington as an actor but the plot of this movie didn't hit like I thought it would.
The Little Things by John Lee Hancock is a crime thriller about Deputy Sheriff Joe "Deke" Deacon (played by Denzel Washington) who joins forces with Sgt. Jim Baxter (by Rami Malek) to search for a serial killer who's terrorizing Los Angeles. As they track the culprit (played by Jared Leto), Baxter is unaware that the investigation is dredging up echoes of Deke's past, uncovering disturbing secrets that could threaten more than his case.
John Lee Hancock captures the audience with edge-of-your-seat scenes and a thick shroud of mystery in his latest film. However, it feels a tad too lengthy. Trimming about thirty minutes could have made it just perfect, in my opinion. The film excels in character development, introducing us to each character in a way that feels personal and deep. The performances are top-notch across the board. Denzel Washington, as always, delivers a rock-solid portrayal, leaving hints early on that his character is wrestling with some heavy secrets from his past, maybe even trying to outrun them. Rami Malek shines as a supporting character, perfectly pushing Denzel to reveal more of his hidden layers. And Jared Leto? He's as brilliantly bizarre as ever, adding just the right touch of mystery to his character, making you wonder what's really going on behind those odd expressions.
Just as the movie seems to be steering towards a spectacular finish, the plot suddenly plummets, crashing down as dramatically as the Titanic. The ending left me scratching my head in disbelief. Why on earth would a detective, played by Rami Malek, willingly hop into a car with someone who might be a serial killer, portrayed by Jared Leto? It defies logic in every possible way. Had John Lee Hancock, the writer-director, stayed true to the initial tension-packed crime drama narrative, this film could have been a knockout. Instead, he veers off course, attempting a twist that aims to bring the story full circle for Deacon, the main character. This leaves us puzzling over the identity of the real serial killer. If pinpointing the killer wasn't crucial, why invest so much time in a pursuit that ends in such an unsatisfying conclusion? While Hancock's attempt at an original ending is commendable, it unfortunately misses the mark for me. That said, the movie shines in other areas - the soundtrack, cinematography, acting, and editing are all spot on. I'm giving this crime/thriller, which has been topping Netflix's charts for weeks, a solid 3 STARS ⭐️⭐️⭐️.
