First, I'll say that the original movie and this one are years apart in age with each character, and maybe they chose black and white to make us less focused on that. Despite that, I really had fun watching this new take on Ripley and that might have been a creative choice with the writer.
"Ripley" is a fresh American TV series that dives into the psychological thriller genre, inspired by Patricia Highsmith's 1955 book, “The Talented Mr. Ripley.” Starring Andrew Scott as the clever Tom Ripley, Johnny Flynn as Dickie Greenleaf, and Dakota Fanning as Marge Sherwood, this series unfolds over eight episodes. Steven Zaillian is the mastermind behind "Ripley," taking on the roles of creator, writer, and director.
In the lively 1960s New York, Tom Ripley (played by Andrew Scott), a smart and mysterious guy, is about to get an offer that could change his life. A rich man asks him to do something big: go to the beautiful and exciting Italy to bring back Dickie Greenleaf (played by Johnny Flynn), a rich man's son who loves the good life too much. Tom thinks it's a simple job, but it quickly turns into an exciting story filled with tricks, lies, and even murder.
As Tom gets to know Dickie's world, he finds himself drawn to the glamorous European life. But as he walks the streets of Italy, he realizes this world is full of dangers and secrets. Tom starts living like he's Dickie, fooling everyone with his ease. But under the beauty and parties, dark secrets and hidden motives lie.
Tom's adventure gets complicated when he's caught in a maze of lies. What's real and what's not starts to blend, making it hard to tell right from wrong. His search for a happy life becomes dangerous, filled with distrust and backstabbing. Getting deeper into Dickie's life, Tom's simple task becomes a fight for survival. His loyalty is questioned, friendships change, and he must walk a thin line, questioning who he really is. Wealth and luxury come with a price, forcing Tom to face the dark side of himself.
"The Talented Mr. Ripley" is a psychologically thrilling story set in a world of beauty and moral questions. It tells the story of a man willing to do anything to change his life, only to get caught in his own trap. Get ready for a journey full of suspense, deception, and the irresistible danger of living on the edge.
Many people didn't like the black and white esthetic, but I think it added an interesting creative flair! The series was really engaging from beginning to end. The dialogue was clever, odd, and brilliantly delivered by the actors. The cast did a fantastic job, and the story was amazing, having originated from a book. The way it was filmed really helped tell the story well. Also, the editing and music were so smooth, they just pulled me deeper into watching without any distractions. I would simply provide this series, Ripley, with 4 STARS ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.
